The Blue Schools Initiative connects students and their communities with the maritime world, building a sense of belonging and inspiring care for our waters as well as opening doors to maritime careers.
Built on decades of effective public-private partnerships with schools and post-secondary institutions, the Blue Schools Initiative now encompasses education, community, and industry working together to solve problems together.
Katie will share the design of the Blue Schools Initiative, how & where it is launched, and program progress to date. There is a nationwide appetite for this blueprint and opportunities for us to be involved.
Katie Oman bio:
Katie Oman is the Chief Operating Officer of Northwest Maritime, a nonprofit dedicated to engaging and educating people of all generations in traditional and contemporary maritime life through a spirit of adventure and discovery. She oversees the organization’s operations and works across its education, workforce development, community, and maritime programs. Before joining Northwest Maritime, she spent two decades as a consultant to nonprofit cultural organizations, helping mission-driven institutions with business planning, capital projects, and organizational strategy. She holds a degree in Architecture from Princeton University and a master’s in Public History and Cultural Heritage at Trinity College Dublin. A lifelong sailor, Katie grew up sailing on the East Coast and has raced to Bermuda, crossed the Atlantic, and worked aboard traditional schooners. She is passionate about the power of hands-on experiences, maritime traditions, and time on the water to build confidence, community, and connection to place.
